The first winter camp for DYC's newest sports offering -- boys and girls lacrosse -- ended in March after seven sessions on Saturday nights at Hinsdale South's field house.

The camp was open to participants of all ages and the instructors were five experienced high school players and one girls lacrosse high school coach, all from Darien. The camp featured over 50 participants, nearly 30 boys and nearly 20 girls ranging from 8 years old to a high school junior. Participants learned the basic fundamentals of lacrosse: cradling, passing and catching, scooping, shooting and dodging. While many participants brought their own sticks, sticks were provided for any attendees that did not own their own stick.

Boys and girls lacrosse are the newest IHSA sports across the state, starting in the spring 2018. Hinsdale Central will host the first state boys and girls lacrosse tournament from May 31-June 2. It was previously played at the club level between high schools.

Lacrosse is considered one of the fastest growing sports in the country. It is the oldest team sport in North America with origins from the 1600s first played by native tribes from upstate New York and Canada. Lacrosse is the official sport of Canada.

The sport has grown recently at the local college level with Aurora University, North Central College, Benedictine University and Elmhurst College adding men's and women's programs in the past few years.

For Darien Youth Club members, opportunities to play this spring are available in leagues in Downers Grove through Naperville-based New Wave for boys and the Hinsdale-based Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association.
